You Can Be Anyone You Want On Halloween

For ages girls have been wearing revealing costumes on Halloween. The idea that you can be anyone who you want and nobody will judge you has been the rule that most people follow. But what does it say about our society when girls are wearing less than what they wear to the beach?

Some people say that it's empowering to women to be able to wear a sexy firefighter outfit, sexy cop, sexy (insert animal here), sexy anything pretty much. But what I don't understand is the argument behind that. Does the idea that you can really be anyone you want on Halloween and have nobody judge you actually go into practice? How do men look at women dressed in these costumes? Do they see these women for actual human beings with intellect and a brain? I don't think a guy looks at a girl dressed in a low cut leotard and bunny ears and thinks "Wow she's really empowered right now with that costume on. I wonder how she feels about the economy and climate change. I want to get to know her.".

  1. You really aren't "any one you want" when the only thing you can be is sexy. Sexy looks good, yeah, but why should this be our only option. I want to dress up as firefighter without showing my boobs. And why is this the only night we can wear whatever we want? Shouldn't we be able to wear sexy clothing every night without being called a whore?

  2. Considering some of the movies and other things we see in the media during Halloween I always see comments like, "It's Halloween, you're allowed to look like a slut." I even witness most of my friends say this to me. Who started the thought that girls were meant to dress like sluts on Halloween? Who said that because you dress like that you are a slut? We have all been so accustomed to what we see throughout the media that we are told what is "slutty looking" and what "is not". Like Gwen said about being able to wear whatever we want any day and not just Halloween. I agree. There is no guarantee that a woman won't be called a slut based on what she's wearing but why does it matter what she wears? She could be a complete prude and still be called a slut just based on what she is wearing. Take "Mean Girls" for example, when they go to a Halloween party the new girl, Kady, is looked at differently based on what she is wearing. Every other girl at the party is dressed like a slut while she is completely covered in clothing. I think during this scene, someone says that "she didn't get the memo". The guys at the party all look at her in a bad way since she is not dressed like a slut. Another way to look at this movie, is that the guy she has a crush on likes her for who she was before she became friends with the most popular girl in school, Regina. This movie discreetly tells us a lesson of "Just be who you are".

  3. It's interesting to me how halloween has gone from dressing up in something gory, and scary, to wearing practically nothing. I mean, yes.. I have definitely been that girl wearing a "sexy" cat outfit, but I don't actually know why I did it. Cat's aren't sexy. They're cute and cuddly. I think now, there is so much pressure to look a certain way, and this is only adding on to it. Who is deciding to make these skimpy outfits? Halloween is supposed to be about dressing up as someone you're not. At the end of the day I think it has turned into a good enough reason to just be sexy for a night and not have anyone judge you for wearing almost nothing.. in the cold.
